H2o is one of the most compelling subjects to paint, and yet it can all end so badly. The problem oft is; where to start?

I wrestled with creating the illusion of fluidity, clarity and some semblance of realism for a long fourth dimension.

Eventually I discovered a mode of looking at water that allows united states of america to recreate it in almost whatsoever circumstance.

This tutorial is primarily about the "details" I utilize when painting water.

The Surface of The Water

You know I meant substrate - this is painting water remember!) in shallow articulate h2o on a sunny day.  I use Artists quality acrylic paints by Chroma Commonwealth of australia, Atelier Interactive and Atelier Free Flow.

This represents the light which is refracted past the surface of the water, down onto the substrate.  Be aware that if you wish to create the illusion of distance then you lot must adjust the size of the "openings" as they recede into the distance. Now for the surface and the light. Thankfully, in this how to paint h2o practise, this is relatively easy - both elements can exist painted using one technique.

When using acrylics, the next part is easier if your previous work is dry out. Make sure you have a very dry brush (size six or viii) with the tiniest amount of pigment and make a serial of very shallow W's. These W's stand for small waves and are where the lite coming from behind the wave is reflected to your center.

They seem to sit above the substrate creating the illusion of depth.

Exercise not paint them neatly and in rows. They will look like a properties for a pantomime.  They should look something similar this.

That's information technology! You accept represented all of the iv elements.

Whoa,  hold on in that location. You may have noticed that the real earth does not always look like your exercise. Yep, its true. It doesn't. This is where you go homework. Go out into the world and find each of these elements. Place each i divide from the others. Identify the shapes and colours associated with each element.

Then, start looking at each of the elements and find how much of the substrate is visible because of the colour of the water. Await at how much is visible because of the surface of the h2o and by default, the light. Spend some time noticing how much each of the elements affects the others in the morning, at sunset - and at other times of the day.

Build your observational skills and watch your paintings amend. Having only iv elements to work with, gives you a good solid base to start.
